It all begins with an idea.

Welcome to Against The Grain Works!

We are a small business dedicated to crafting high-quality, small-batch woodworking products.

Scott Layne, the owner and lead creator, started turning since high school in 2009 and has refined his woodworking skills for over 14 years in Butte County, guided by his mentor Ron Magoon, who is a national woodworker.

He meticulously ensures the quality of each product by selecting the quality tree pieces, processing them into slabs or chunks, and then handcrafting each item. As well as experimenting with different varieties of hardwoods, in order to innovate and push the boundaries of his craft with old school techniques resulting in modern work of art, that not only appeal to older woodworkers but a younger audience.

In addition to our handcrafted items, we also provide a unique variety of slabs and blanks for other woodworkers, creators, or anyone looking to create a custom piece for a project of their own. As we want to encourage and make it easy for anyone interested in getting involved in woodturning. We will also be providing one-on-one woodturning classes that cover the process from start to finish.

Scott’s vision for Against The Grain Works is to create unique, timeless, and functional pieces that also serve as works of art. He takes great joy in collaborating with clients to transform their ideas into custom woodworking creations.

Thank you for your time and support. Enjoy!
